13 Safe, Bucket-List Destinations for Solo Female Travelers

13 Inspiring and Safe Destinations for Solo Female Travellers

Travelling alone can be life-changing. After a decade of solo adventures, I’ve learned that safety and joy can absolutely coexist on the road—especially when you choose the right destinations and trust your instincts. The places below consistently felt welcoming, easy to navigate, and memorable for all the best reasons.

Solo safety tip: Share your plans with a trusted friend, keep copies of your documents in the cloud, and use offline maps so you’re never stuck without directions.

Whether you’re planning your very first solo escape or you’re a seasoned independent traveller, these 13 destinations offer a fantastic mix of culture, scenery, and peace of mind. I’ve shuffled the order a little from how I usually share them—because the best trip is the one that gets you excited to book.

Iceland

With one of the lowest crime rates in the world, Iceland is a dream for solo travellers who love the outdoors. Volcanoes, waterfalls, glaciers, and hot springs turn every day into an adventure, and Reykjavik feels more like a friendly town than a capital city. I’ve driven the country in winter and would happily go back solo in a heartbeat.

Where to stay

Self-catering is a smart choice in Iceland to keep costs down. Central Reykjavik apartments like Skólavörðustígur Apartments make a great base. Prefer countryside calm (and a chance to spot the northern lights)? Try peaceful rural stays such as these apartments outside the city.

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Abu Dhabi is consistently ranked among the world’s safest cities. I felt completely comfortable exploring solo—people were respectful, the city is spotless, and the beaches are lovely. Don’t miss the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and Qasr Al Watan. Do remember to dress modestly away from pools and beaches.

Where to stay

I enjoyed Aloft Abu Dhabi—stylish, comfortable, and with a great pool. The city is large, so expect to use taxis or ride-hailing to get around.

Portugal

Portugal strikes the perfect balance: gorgeous coastline, friendly locals, and good value. The Algarve makes an easy solo base for boat trips, coastal walks, and sunny beach days. I’ve found people warm and patient—making an effort with a few Portuguese phrases goes a long way.

Where to stay

For a quieter, pretty base, Tavira is a gem. Consider budget-friendly Al-Gharb Tavira Eco GuestHouse or rooms with river views at Formosa Guest House.

Maun, Botswana

Gateway to the Okavango Delta, Maun is small, friendly, and makes an unforgettable launchpad for multi-day safaris. I spent days camping in the Delta—think glowing sunsets, elephants at the water’s edge, and the feeling that you’re somewhere truly wild. I experienced very few issues; catcalling happened occasionally, but it didn’t overshadow the trip.

For Delta excursions, local outfitters are fantastic—I had a brilliant time with Mosu Safari Tours.

Where to stay

I liked Sedia Riverside Hotel for comfortable rooms, genuinely kind staff, and bird-filled gardens.

Paris, France

Paris was my first-ever fully solo trip—and I’ve returned again and again. Long lunches, world-class art, elegant architecture, and neighbourhood strolls make solo days feel indulgent rather than lonely. From the Eiffel Tower and Louvre to leafy gardens and hidden streets, there’s always more to discover.

Where to stay

For a classic Parisian vibe near the Eiffel Tower, I adore Grand Hôtel Lévêque on lovely Rue Cler—steps from bakeries, florists, and cafés.

Le Consulat café in Montmartre, Paris

Thailand

Thailand’s kindness and energy make it perfect for solo travellers. I didn’t visit alone the first time, but I’d happily go solo now. Bangkok buzzes with colour and food, southern beaches are postcard-perfect, and places like Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake are simply breathtaking. I’ve met so many generous locals here—Thailand has a way of staying with you.

Where to stay (Bangkok)

In Chinatown, Pho Place is simple, clean, and tucked just far enough from the main road to be peaceful after a busy day.

Corfu, Greece

Corfu feels like home every time I visit—warm, safe, and full of life. It’s easy to get around by car or scooter, and there’s plenty to do between beaches, harbours, and hilltop villages. For a relaxed solo beach break, Paleokastritsa is pure magic.

Where to stay

I love self-catering in Corfu so I can eat my way through the tavernas. Try Paradise Apartments or Arianna Apartments. Want upscale views? Akrotiri Beach Resort Hotel is a solid splurge.

Riga, Latvia

Riga surprised me—in the best way. It’s compact, artistic, and beautiful, with a modest, friendly feel. I felt safe even after dark. Free walking tours are a brilliant way to get oriented (Old Town and the “Alternative” tour are both great) and to gather tips from locals.

Where to stay

For Old Town convenience, consider this chic studio or budget-friendly Allure Rooms. I also enjoyed a river-view apartment via Airbnb.

Spain

Spain delivers on food, culture, coastlines, and city breaks—Malaga, Madrid, and Granada are all fantastic solo picks. I’ve always felt safe, with one caveat: big-city pickpockets. Keep bags zipped, phones stashed, and valuables in sight.

City tip: In crowded areas, wear a cross-body bag with the zip facing your body and avoid leaving your phone on café tables.

Belgium

Belgium is small, easy to navigate, and polished—Bruges especially is a safe, fairy-tale city for wandering solo. Chocolate, waffles, canals, and gabled rooftops set the scene. I loved strolling the historic centre after dark; it feels like a film set.

Where to stay (Bruges)

For value near the station, ibis Budget is convenient. Prefer a central boutique stay? Look at The White Queen B&B or Hotel ’t Putje near Minnewater.

United Kingdom

Get beyond London and the UK becomes a solo traveller’s playground: Devon’s Jurassic Coast, the Cotswolds’ honey-stone villages, Pembrokeshire’s wild bays, and Scottish isle drama. Hiking is superb—just check weather and trail conditions, and go early in peak season.

Australia

My first long-haul solo trip—nerves vanished the moment I hit the road. From Sydney to Cairns and Melbourne, Australia is built for independent travel, with great hostels, easy logistics, and no language barrier. Do be wildlife-aware when hiking or swimming.

Outdoor tip (Australia): Check local advice on snakes, jellyfish seasons, and crocodile zones. When in doubt, join a guided hike.

Germany

Bonn pleasantly surprised me: compact, walkable, and full of culture, with exceptionally friendly locals. I felt safe exploring at night and loved the mix of museums, river walks, and evening performances.

Where to stay (Bonn)

The centrally located Domicil Hotel Bonn is a solid pick. If you want something fun and modern on the river, try Prize by Radisson.

As an Aussie: big yes to the wildlife tip. Always check local advice before swimming in the north—stinger season is no joke!
